[End-of-year music awards ①] YG vs. non-YG, who can beat BIGBANG?

Only three months are left until the end of the year 2015. As the end of the year is approaching, Korea’s music scene is getting hot once again. That is because a series of end-of-year music awards are waiting for music fans. Beginning from Melon Music Awards scheduled for November 7, a series of music awards including “2015 MAMA” and music awards of public TV networks will be held until early next year.

The meaning of the grand prize at those music awards are not like in the past, as prizes for each section are gaining more significant meaning, but anyway, someone should be the winner of the trophies. Music fans are paying the biggest attention to who will receive the man’s and woman’s rookie awards, album of the year award, song of the year award, and singer of the year award. Although a little but premature, fans are merrily predicting the winners of those awards.

The most remarkable achievements have been made mostly by YG Entertainment for this year. It is highly likely that the competition for music awards will be between YG artists and non-YG artists.

In the year 2015, BIGBANG swept all major music charts. Starting from “LOSER” and “BAE BAE” released on May 1, “BANG BANG BANG” and “WE LIKE 2 PARTY” were released in June, “SOBER” and “IF YOU” in July, and “LET’S NOT FALL IN LOVE” and “ZUTTER” in August.

Those songs made this year’s summer “the season of BIGBANG”. BIGBANG’s new songs released from May to August this year swept not only the top rankings on music charts, but also No.1 trophies of TV music shows. The only rival for BIGBANG to compete for the No.1 was BIGBANG themselves.

Then, the baton was passed to “monstrous rookie” iKON. iKON released “MY TYPE” in mid-September and “chewed up” music charts even before their official debut. “RHYTHM TA” and “AIRPLANE” unveiled on October 1 with the official debut also fascinated music fans immediately.

However, the power of SM Entertainment, the biggest rival for YG, is also substantial. SM artists also made big achievements during this year, including SHINee’s “View” released in May, Super Junior who released the 10th anniversary album, and solo vocalists such as Jonghyun, Taeyeon, and Kyuhyun.

To look into the rankings on charts only, past hit songs performed in the “Saturday Music Festival” of MBC’s TV show “The Infinite Challenge” created sensation during the first half of this year. Then, in the second half, hip-hop music enjoyed big popularity because of the big popularity of “Show Me the Money 4″. In the second half, too, songs and artists of a variety of genres excited the music scene.

Music fans are now paying keen attention to whether YG artists will sweep all major prizes of end-of-year music awards or an unexpected dark horse will arise.
