[REVIEW] BIGBANG 5th MINI ALBUM "ALIVE"
Fans of Big Bang have the rare luxury of growing up with their favorite boy band and their ever-evolving music. Though their sound may come off as inconsistent at times occasionally straying from Teddy‘s hand in production with experiments in different genres and producers, I can’t imagine their brand of music being released by any other group. They prove this more than ever with ‘Alive‘.
The intro track of the EP, ‘Alive’, serves as a brief album opener for the album, and a lighthearted ode to their comeback. With rhythmic ramblings reminiscent of the Bee Gees‘ with a disco-electro beat, Big Bang celebrates their long awaited return, and perhaps their survival through the scandals and allegations last year.
Big Bang owes much of their success to their thorough understanding of the K-Pop field. With a headstrong blitz of non-stop single releases, they ease back into the game with the wistful promotional single, “Blue.” Lyrically and sonically, the song seems to be a continuation of their previous single, “Love Song“, where they first dabbled in acoustic rock/pop heartbreak. “Blue”s undemanding sound manages to cater to those who yearned for the boys’ return as well as pleasing the critical K-Pop listener.
While Big Bang sings the blues for the first chunk of their EP, they take us back to their humble beginnings with the second single, “Bad Boy,” a confessional ’90s urban jam pleading for their love interest’s acceptance. Guided by trenchant strings and narcissistic street percussions, the bad boys are just too cool to not forgive. Come to think of it, this blend of openness and cockiness is what we all find charming about the band, and “Bad Boy” is the perfect reminder. As far as production is concerned, this track is notably the best sounding track off the album. The composition is lively, yet appropriate to the song, and all the sounds are perfectly audible and balanced.
A Big Bang release wouldn’t be complete , however, without a signature dance party jam befitting to their name. “Fantastic Baby” unleashes the wild side of Big Bang that some of us were too hesitant to see before listening to their first two singles. Hook heavy from the silly “Boom Shaka Laka” chanting to standard Vengeance FX loops, the bass shuffling, floor-filler serves its purpose as the track to propel Big Bang back to the Korean TV and radio broadcasts. Though “Fantastic Baby” doesn’t divulge itself into cutting edge electronic production or clever songwriting, it allows Big Bang to satiate the tastes of all their fans.
Although the ‘Alive’ mini album is marketed as a record with 6 separate singles of the total 7 tracks, we’re still treated with the obvious fillers. Yes, it’s true every album has its fillers, but the letdown stems from how they’re all proclaimed to be “title tracks” (in K-Pop terms, “lead singles”).
Another concerning factor I found in ‘Alive’ is their lack of voice pertaining to their recent events. I find their “Blue” theme and the inclusion of a Daesung solo at the end of the record suggestive to their feelings towards their recent scandals, but lyrically they evade the subject matters. There was potential in their intro track, ‘Alive’, but before making a statement, the track cuts off at 47 seconds.
Not to say they are obligated to regurgitate all their thoughts and feelings in song, but as Tablo elegantly exemplified with his album ‘Fever’s End‘, there are tasteful and subtle ways to revisit those hardship-filled events. From this realization, we’re left to wonder, had their recent trials and tribulations not occurred, exactly how much of ‘Alive’ would actually be affected? Would it sound more or less the same? Then we ask, if they weren’t ready to completely break their silence on the recent events, should they have perhaps waited longer to release a mini album?
Despite of said kept silence, Big Bang releases another exemplary K-Pop album, exceeding the requirements set by most of their peers. Their close involvement with their album, most notably G-Dragon's, radiates from all stems of ‘Alive’s production. Although it seems “Fantastic Baby” will be hauling their success for this project, the distant cry of “Blue” continues to echo within our brains. “Blue” measures Big Bang’s growth since their debut, distancing them from their former selves. It also distances them from other K-Pop boy bands. Actually, it distances them from everyone in K-Pop.

[NEWS] Big Bang takes over Billboard charts
After achieving a Perfect All-Kill in Korea, Big Bang almost repeated this same feat on this week’s Billboard ‘K-Pop Hot 100‘ chart.
Of the top 10, Big Bang took a whopping 5 spots! “Blue” came in at #1 followed by “Love Dust” at #2, “Bad Boy” at #3, “Fantastic Baby” at #5, and “Ain’t No Fun” at #8.
That wasn’t all as Big Bang’s “Alive” album also made it on the normal Billboard chart coming in at 150, right above Justin Bieber‘s “My World 2.0“, they also charted #4 on the Heatseekers Albums chart, #22 on Independent Albums chart, and #4 on the World Albums chart.

[NEWS] BIGBANG's "Alive" Continues to Set Records Charts on Billboard's 200
BIGBANG continues to make an impact with their latest release, “Alive.” Most recently, the group won their first mutizen of 2012 with “Blue” on MNET’s “M! Countdown” without officially promoting the track. BIGBANG further sets the standard for K-Pop groups as their influence extends beyond Asia to the world. It has been announced that BIGBANG made it onto the U.S. Billboard 200 charts. Earlier, the group topped the Billboard K-Pop charts and has now made it onto the U.S. charts. BIGBANG’s album “Alive” has debuted on the chart at #150, one spot above Justin Bieber’s “My World 2.0.” The Billboard 200 charts are made up of the week's top-selling albums across all genres and ranked by sales data which has been compiled by Nielsen SoundScan. BIGBANG sets another record as this marks the first time a K-Pop group has achieved such an honor. It is quite impressive as the group has not promoted the album in the U.S. and the fact that it is a Korean language album. At this time, the group does not have plans for an English language album or full U.S. promotions.
The effect of BIGBANG carries on as it is felt throughout the charts domestically and abroad placing #4 on the Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart, #22 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart, and #4 on Billboard’s World Albums chart. The members may have had a rough ending to 2011 but 2012 is a brand new start full of hope for the group. Ever since BIGBANG captured the MTV EMA Award away from pop queen Britney Spears, the group has been on a roll breaking hearts and taking names against international music’s biggest acts. If anyone had doubted BIGBANG’s abilities and the influence of K-Pop on the world music scene they better prepare to eat their words.

[NEWS] Big Bang Sweeps Billboard K-Pop Chart
Is there a music chart left that Big Bang hasn’t conquered?
After conquering various music charts in Korea and abroad, Big Bang has chalked up another victory by taking over the top three spots on the weekly K-Pop Billboard Charts.
The weekly Korea K-Pop Hot 100 chart was released on March 9 and showed Big Bang having cleaned up the top three spots. In first place was Blue, followed by Love Dust and Bad Boy, both which made their debut on the charts, while Blue held onto the top spot from the previous week.
It didn’t stop there as the top twenty positions were also riddled with Big Bang’s other tracks including Fantastic Baby at number five, Ain’t No Fun at number eight, Wings at thirteen and Intro (Alive) at nineteen.
Seems like the group’s strategy to make all six songs from their mini album ′title songs′ has worked, as it′s hard to see anything other than that now-iconic album cover on nearly all related music charts!

[NEWS] Big Bang’s ‘Comeback Show’ vs. KBS’ Music Bank – Who Will Emerge the Victor?
It’s a battle for viewership ratings!
SBS’ special broadcast of Big Bang’s Big Bang Comeback Show will be airing opposite KBS’ weekly Music Bank on March 9 at 6 pm (KST) and 6:10 pm respectively.
The Big Bang Comeback Show will be mainly be composed of Big Bang’s concert performances from its recent Big Show concerts, which were held from March 2 through March 4, in support of Big Bang’s newest mini album, Alive.
While some 39,000 fans attended the concerts, the performances and behind the scenes footage were all captured by SBS′ cameras for all those who were unable to attend the concert - and even for those who just wanted to relive the joy of seeing Big Bang back on stage.
However SBS’ Big Bang Comeback Show is set to air at the same time opposite KBS’ weekly Music Bank leaving viewers torn over which show they will watch.
In one corner is Big Bang, one of the biggest groups of K-Pop, who′s returned after a year and a half break, filled with tumultous events. The group’s recent concert was met with rave reviews by those who attended, raising the anticipation for those who have only been able to experience the new album through songs and music videos.
In the other is Music Bank, which boasts a mighty line-up of some 25 teams, including miss A, MBLAQ, FT Island, Tony An, John Park, Nine Muses and more.
Given the rather shaky relationship KBS has with Big Bang’s agency, YG Entertainment, some are questioning if the decision to pit Big Bang’s show against KBS was done as an intentional snub. Regardless of the motive though, many are agreeing it’s going to be a tough call to make that night.
