Boy band BIGBANG’s G-Dragon has gained the honor of being selected as the icon of the year.
G-Dragon was awarded “STYLE ICON OF THE YEAR”, which is equivalent to the grand prize of “2013 Style Icon Awards” (“2013 SIA”), which was held in the afternoon of the 24, at CJ E&M Center located in Sangam-dong, Seoul.
At the awards, G-Dragon got the grand prize, beating other prominent 10 main prize awardees. He stated his impressions, saying “I’m grateful that I’m given this big prize. I’ll do my best to be a better artist.”
It is the first time that a solo singer is given the prize at SIA. Although singer Rain (Jung Ji Hoon) got the grand prize at 2008 SIA, actress Jang Mee Hee was given the prize at the same time. In addition, in 2009, actress Kim Hye Soo, in 2010, actor Lee Byung Hun, in 2011, actor Cha Seung Won, and in 2012, actor Jang Dong Gun received the award.
All the other main prize winners who were the candidate for the grand prize were prominent stars, including actress Gong Hyo Jin AKA “Gongvely (Gong + lovely)” who has drawn much popularity with her recent drama SBS “Master’s Sun”, hip-hop duo Dynamic Duo, who have been popular recently, comedian Shin Dong Yup, who is famous for his fun x-rated talks, girl band SISTAR, whose music has been loved a lot on charts, actor Yeo Jin Goo, who has swept the film world with his recent work in “Hwai- A Child who Swallowed a Monster”, actor Lee Su Jin, who has established his position with tvN’s entertainment show “Grandpa than Flower”, actor Lee Jong Suk, who has created sensation with his drama “I listen to your voice”, actor Jung Woo Sung, who has shown charisma in his movie “Watchers”, G-Dragon, who has proven his position as Korea’s best icon with new album “COUP D’ETAT”, and Tilda Swinton, who left a strong impression in film “Snow Piercer”.
Special prize awardees were famous stars as well. Crayon Pop, who has swept the pop music world in 2013 received New Icon Prize, giving more fuel to the Awards, and Sooyoung of girl band Girl’s Generation and actor Choi Jin Hyuk received Best K-Style Prize, catching many people’s eyes.
There were a lot of attractions at the awards. The hottest musician nowadays, Primary and GianT, opened the celebratory stage of the awards and Crayon Pop, who received New Icon Prize, also won the hearts and minds of the audience with their bubbly performance. Plus, American singer ASAP ROCKY, who received Global Icon Prize swept the scene with a colorful performance and G-Dragon with a concert-like stage and girl band SISTAR with a sexy performance. Dynamic Duo also made the festive atmosphere reach the peak, by giving a hot performance.
Meanwhile, Style Icon Awards is the only style awards in Korea, where figures who have won the minds of the public and changed their lifestyle in a variety of fields including broadcasting, pop music, fashion, and art, are selected as awardees. 10 stars including actress Gong Hyo Jin, actor Yeo Jin Goo, actor Lee Jong Suk, actor Jung Woo Sung, girl band SISTAR, Big Bang’s G-Dragon, Dynamic Duo, comedian Shin Dong Yup, actress Tilda Swinton have been selected as “10 icons” of this year.
