[NEWS] YG Artists Win Seven Awards at 2015 MMAs

The 2015 Melon Music Awards ended successfully, signaling the start of the awards season. YG artists swept the awards with BIGBANG winning the Artist of the Year, Best Song, Top10, Netizens’ Pick; iKON winning Rookie of the Year; and TEDDY winning Best Composer award.

The 2015 Melon Music Awards took place at the Olympic Gymnastics Stadium, Seoul on November 7. Even though it was raining, a host of fans came to send their support to the musicians. Musicians also seemed to be excited to go stage.

The Melon Music Awards has 21 categories: Top10, Best Artist, Best Song, Rookie of the Year, Netizens’ Pick, Hot Trend, Best OST, Best Dance, Best Rap/Hiphop, Best R&B/Soul, Best Rock, Best Pop, Best Indie, Best Trot, Best Music Video, Best Composer, MBC Music Star, and 1theK Performance.

BIGBANG received four awards that day winning the Top10, Best Artist, Best Song, and Netizens’ Pick awards. iKON won the Rookie of the Year, taking their first step to become the next BIGBANG. The Best Composer award went to YG’s lead producer TEDDY.

To repay the fans for their support, BIGBANG performed five hit singles of their MADE series albums. Their “IF YOU” and “SOBER” performances were especially meaningful since it was the first time BIGBANG performed these songs on stage. They also sang “BANG BANG BANG”, “LOSER”, and “FANTASTIC BABY” and heated up the show.

Receiving the Rookie of the Year award is significant since artists can only get the award once throughout their career. This year’s Rookie of the Year award went to iKON, who proved that they deserved the award with the huge response they got for their “MY TYPE” and “RHYTHM TA” performances.

After receiving the Artist of the Year award, BIGBANG said, “Ten years have passed since we’ve debuted. It’s been a long time since all our five members attended an award ceremony and we’re so happy that we have received such a prestigious award. We will become true artists that continue to show new music and new stages.”

Meanwhile, the Best Album award went to EXO. Within 40 days of its release, their EXODUS album sold more than 730,000 copies. If you included the album’s China edition and the repackaged edition called “Love Me Right”, the album sold more than 1 million copies.

The Female Rookie of the Year award went to Girl Friend. They debuted in January with “Glass Bead”. They caught the eyes and ears of the fans with their fresh and innocent appeal, and their next single “Me gustas tu” became a huge hit. When they were announced as the winner, Girl Friend members burst into tears and thanked the staff, their families, and their fans.

With the Melon Music Awards as a start, many award ceremonies will be held. The Mnet Asia Music Awards(MAMA) will be held on December 2, the Golden Disk Awards on January 14-15, the Seoul Music Awards on January 22, and the Gaon K-pop Awards on January 28.
