[2013 MAMA] G-DRAGON BIGGEST WINNER - RECEIVES 4 AWARDS

Cho Yong Pil, G-DRAGON and Exo stood shoulder to shoulder at the 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) by winning the Grand Prizes of the event. It was especially meaningful for G-DRAGON as he received three other rewards, making him a winner of four prizes in total.

Held at the Asia World Expo in Hong Kong on Nov 22, the 2013 MAMA called on many K-Pop artists who boast global popularity as awardees. The artists expressed their gratitude and happiness by delivering dynamic performances, which was also a way of repaying the fans’ infinite support and cheering.

The four-hour long 2013 MAMA was divided into 3 large parts, and including the 24 awards broadcasted on television, there were 30 trophies in total, also taking in the number of those that were not aired due to the absence of the artists. The 30 trophies were fairly distributed to artists from Korea and abroad. But these distributions of so many trophies to different artists made each award look less important than they actually are.

On the day, apart from the biggest prize, Artist of the Year, G-DRAGON also received Nissan Juke Best Music Video, Best Male Artist, Best Dance Performance – Male Solo awards.

SISTAR was awarded Best dance performance female group and Style in Music Award, while Infinite received Worldwide Performer Award and Best Male Group, and other artists like Girls’ Generation, Infinite, A Pink, Dynamic Duo, BaeChiGi, Ailee, Crayon Pop, and foreign artists including Aaron Kwok, Ylvis, and the legendary Stevie Wonder also received awards.

The 2013 MAMA was more like a music festival than music awards. The stage was filled with artists who are rare to be gathered in one place, of course including the world’s legendary artist like Stevie Wonder and Hollywood celebrity Paris Hilton, and the YouTube star Ylvis.

There were some quite rare-to-see collaboration performances as well. The Norwegian brothers Ylvis, now dubbed the second Psy on YouTube with their unique song and dance moves, did collaboration with South Korea’s viral group Crayon Pop—a remix of ‘The Fox’ and ‘Bar Bar Bar’ together. The winners of Superstar Korea and China, Park Jae Jung and Zhu Jia Jia, also showcased their collaboration stage.

The climax of the show came at the very end, when Hyorin and Aaron Kwok sang with the legendary Stevie Wonder ‘I Just Called to Say I Love You’. This collaboration work of the top pop musician with K-Pop star and China’s star was surely something that is more than rare.

But there was a group that caught the attention of the 10,000 or so audience without collaborating with others, and that was BIGBANG. After T.O.P’s ‘Doom Dada’, TAEYANG’s ‘Ringa Linga’, SEUNGRI’s ‘Strong Baby’, ‘Let’s Talk About Love’, and G-DRAGON’s ‘Crooked,’ the five powerful got together to bring on something even far more powerful, through the song ‘Fantastic Baby.’

With the flood of trophies, each award seemed to lose its value, but the 5th anniversary of MAMA was surely something very special, perhaps a special music festival, that made all the artists come together, going far beyond just Asia and from across the globe. Now there is even higher expectation for next years MAMA already.
