[Look@Japan] BIGBANG Tops Japan’s Charts, Rekindling the Korean Wave in Japan

K-pop artists are regaining popularity in Japan.

K-pop has been on a decline in Japan due to sour Korea-Japan relations and anti-Korean sentiments and actions such as hate speeches. However, it seems K-pop is regaining its popularity.

BIGBANG is spearheading the trend. They are currently huge in Japan. Even celebrities have professed that they are huge fans of BIGBANG.

This new trend is reflected in the singles and album charts of Asahi TV’s Music Station, the most popular music show in Japan. BIGBANG appeared on the show for the first time in three and a half years on February 5.

Korean musicians took the top three spot of the Music Station’s albums chart that was announced on February 6. BIGBANG’s “MADE SERIES” was no.1 followed by Supernova Sungmo’s “THE FUTURE WITH U” and GOT7’s “Around The World” at no.2 and no.3, respectively.

BIGBANG’s album is also no.1 on the Oricon charts with Supernova Sungmo and GOT7 fighting for the second place.

According to SoundScan, BIGBANG’s album is currently the most selling album in Japan followed by GOT7 and Supernova Sungmo’s album.

Korean musicians are dominating the music charts and the album sales in Japan, a sign that K-pop is making a comeback in Japan after its slump.
