[NEWS] “THREE REASONS” WHY BIGBANG FASCINATED 770,000 JAPANESE FANS

Idol boy group BIGBANG (G-DRAGON, T.O.P, TAEYANG, DAESUNG and SEUNGRI) fascinated Japan. BIGBANG has recently held “BIGBANG JAPAN DOME TOUR 2013-2014” in six cities in Japan for the first time for a foreign singer, and all the tickets for the tour were sold out. Such unusual success has proven BIGBANG’s solid popularity in Japan once again.

BIGBANG started their performance in Japan in 2009 by releasing their first singe in the country “My Heaven”. How could BIGBANG stand on the top of the local music scene within five years of their debut in the country? We found out three reasons for such a success, from BIGBANG six dome tour’s encore concert held on the 13 this month at Osaka Kyocera Dome.

◆ First, Different Scale

BIGBANG’s Japan six dome tour began at Saitama Seibu Dome on November 16, 2013. The tour went on to Osaka Dome, Fukuoka Yafuoku Dome, Nagoya Dome, Tokyo Dome, and Sapporo Dome. Then, BIGBANG came back to Osaka Dome to give the grand finale to the tour. In the tour, BIGBANG held total 16 concerts.

The tour drew a huge number of audience. It attracted 80,000 to Seibu Dome, 150,000 to Kyocera Dome, 100,000 to Yafuoku Dome, 81,000 to Nagoya Dome, 165,000 to Tokyo Dome, 45,000 to Sapporo Dome, and 150,000 to Kyocera Dome again. So, total 771,000 people met BIGBANG in the tour. The number reflects the popularity of five BIGBANG guys in Japan.

The tour was splendid and magnificent. For example, Kyocera Dome where the tour dropped the curtain was shot by colorful lightings constantly, and huge special equipment worked as the bridge of communication with fans. A moving stage with 90 meters of width and 23 meters of height brought BIGBANG closer to fans. Five BIGBANG members on the moving stage could make eye-contacts with the audience in far seats. A moving car came upon the stage, too. BIGBANG on the car gave out gifts to fans, such as BIGBANG slogans and capes.

BIGBANG spared no investment in perfect “harmony” with fans. Approximately five billion won was put into producing and management and as many as 800 staff members worked for each concert of the tour.

The tour garnered a huge profit as well. All the tickets for all the 16 concerts were sold out, and the price for a ticket was 9,500 yen, which amounts to about 100,000 Korean won. Ticket sales alone recorded more than 70 billion won. In a word, the tour was truly “huge”.

◆ Second, Great Talent Not Only as Team but Also as Solo Artist

As each of all the five BIGBANG members has been performing as a solo artist, they shined on their solo stages, too. In the first half of the concert, BIGBANG’s sentimental but powerful appeal was highlighted, while they showcased a series of solo performances in the second half. All the five members demonstrated perfect musical color and character that fit the artistic direction each one of them pursues.

G-DRAGON presented his producing capability and unique fashion sense in performance of “CRAYON” and “CROOKED”. T.O.P boasted an extraordinary presence by his outstanding rap. His heavy rapping based on the rich low voice in “TURN IT UP” and “DOOM DADA” was enough to sweep the stage.

TAEYANG boasted his fluid movement and talented vocal by performing “ONLY LOOK AT ME” “WEDDING DRESS”, and “RINGA LINGA”. SEUNGRI sang “LET’S TALK ABOUT LOVE” “GOTTA TALK TO YOU”, and “WHAT CAN I DO”, and DAESUNG showed off his charming and witty appeal by singing “WINGS” and “JOYFUL”.

As it has been already proven, BIGBANG members have great talent as a solo artist as much as they show great performance as a team. Each of them has proven that by their solo performance, and each of them have famous “hit songs”. BIGBANG presented shining performances and a variety of colorful spectacles individually and in a team.

◆ Three, Bond with Local Fans from Performances in Japan

Most of all, BIGBANG’s communication with fans was fantastic. Of course, it was BIGBANG who brought the concert to the climax, but fans’ chanting and cheering contributed to the success of the concerts, too.

When BIGBANG sang their hit “HANDS UP”, fans exclaimed “Hey, Ho~” in tune with the song. When T.O.P came to front to perform his part of rap, the audience, shouted “T.O.P” with one mouth. In the crowded concert hall, fans enjoyed the concert passionately without getting tired for just one moment. They sang along with BIGBANG and shook BIGBANG’s official glow sticks. They were also busy dancing with BIGBANG.

Such response of Japanese fans was possible based on BIGBANG’s career that has been built so far in the country. Before the concert, president of YG Entertainment Japan Watanabe Yoshimi highlighted this point.

He said, “BIGBANG has been exposed to Japanese TV and magazines much, by their promotion in Japan. The more they are exposed to Japanese media, the more Japanese (fans) feel familiar with them.”

Notably, he rated SEUNGRI’s performance in the country high. He said, “SEUNGRI is well immersed in the culture of Osaka. People of Osaka feel familiar with BIGBANG through SEUNGRI.”

Plus, he mentioned BIGBANG’s performances in Japan one by one and complimented them by saying, “All the five members seem to have been absorbed in the Japanese life style and when they are all together, they create a big synergy effect.”

The president of YG Japan knows the local circumstances better than anybody else and manages his artists strategically. So, his remarks on BIGBANG remind us how much effort BIGBANG has made to get closer to Japanese fans. The sense of closeness by actively performing for local fans. This is the last reason why 770,000 people were captivated by BIGBANG.
