[NEWS] G-DRAGON & TAEYANG on “WIN”, How BIGBANG Teaches Novice Artists

Superstar G-Dragon and Taeyang, members of popular boy band Big Bang, were once YG trainees.

In “WHO IS NEXT : WIN” (“WIN”), a survival show to select YG Entertainment’s new boy band, which was aired on the 20 on Mnet, Taeyang and G-Dragon appeared as producers of Team A (Gang Seung Yoon, Lee Sung Hoon, Song Min Ho, Kim Jin Woo, and Nam Tae Hyun) and Team B (B.I, Goo Jun Hwe, Kim Jin Hwan, Bobby, Song Yoon Hyung, and Kim Dong Hyuk).

The members of Team A and Team B were tensed up by appearance of superstar Taeyang and G-Dragon, but the two stars encouraged the nervous junior artists, saying “We were once trainees too.” Taeyang added, “I wish your success as artists because I know how much you want it. I understand you because I was once a trainee.”

The first battle between the two teams was not only the confrontation of pride between Taeyang and G-Dragon, but also an opportunity for them to encourage would-be artists with their past experience as trainees. The two taught “WIN” members more passionately than anyone.

First, Taeyang spared no advice for Team A, as a charismatic teacher who points out even the most detailed parts for his students. He gave a straightforward evaluation to Team A’s performance of his own songs “Only Look at Me” and “Wedding Dress”, saying “Your performance is so perfect that I don’t’ need to do anything about it. But, it’s insipid.”

He went on to say, “In some aspect, your performance is the worst. I’m not sure whether it’s right to correct it one by one.” He was rather perplexed by Team A’s performance, but slowly polished the team as a producer. He gave advice to his team, saying, “You seem to feel pressured to show something. Your performance makes the audience suffocated. All I could see was your will to show something.” Then, he passionately helped his mentees by shedding sweats to perform and rehearse with them.”

G-Dragon showed a great passion too. He even wrote down every characteristic of his team members. He said, “You should power up when you need to show something strong. But, you need to also completely loosen up when necessary.” He took care of everything from rapping to vocal and performance. He tapped beat and demonstrated the performance himself, and even gave a rap lesson to Bobby.

“WIN” is a real survival show where would-be artists trained through YG’s training system for years engage in fierce competitions in Team A and B. The two teams do three battles against one another for ten weeks, over the opportunity to be members of “WINNER”, YG’s new boy band in eight years.
