[NEWS] BIGBANG & G-DRAGON win 4 awards from 27th GOLDEN DISK AWARDS

The musical extravaganza of the Samsung Galaxy The 27th Golden Disk Awards ended last night with a bang at the Sepang International Circuit, only the second time that the prestigious K-Pop awards show has been held outside its native South Korea.

Known as the 'Korean Grammys', the 27th Golden Disk Awards saw 25 of K-Pop's biggest names gathering onstage in Malaysia, to the delight of 15,000 fans who attended the two-day event.

The event was hosted by several K-Pop artistes - CN Blue's Yong Hwa and Kara's Nicole on the first day, and FT Island's Hongki and Sistar's Dasom on the second.

Among the major winners from the event were Super Junior, who won for Album of the Year and breakout star PSY, who won Song of the Year for his hit GangNam Style.

There were also multiple winners for the categories for best album and song categories, as well as for special categories organised by the main sponsors.

Fans at the event were also treated to performances by the winners, who entertained the crowd with several of their biggest hit tunes. Audience members were also introduced to several rising stars in the K-Pop scene, including solo acts Ailee, Lee Hii, Juniel, Heo Gak and K.Will.

Among the performance highlights from the event were first-time duets between acts like B.A.P. and Secret, Juniel and Jong Hyun from CN Blue, and an exclusive performance by the two subgroups of Korean-Chinese group EXO, onstage together for the first time.

There was also a special medley of K-Pop hits from the 90s, performed by several members of different K-Pop groups.

Also gracing the event to lend her support to the fast-growing K-Pop community in Malaysia was the Minister of Tourism, Dato Seri Dr. Ng Yen Yen.

Since its inaugural event in 1986, the Golden Disk Awards has been renowned for its legitimacy and neutrality, becoming the most sought-after prize by musicians. It also serves as the most accurate indicator of the Korean music scene.

Unlike other Korean year-end music awards, such as those organised by broadcast companies, the Golden Disk Awards hands out honours based on album sales and digital downloads, thus highlighting not just top K-Pop stars, but also independent musicians with a niche fanbase.

The event was sponsored by JTBC and Ilgan Sports, organised by Joongang Culture Media and Mediartncomm Co. Ltd., supported by the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) together with the Ministry of Tourism and presented by Samsung Malaysia Electronics as the title sponsor.
