[NEWS] “Chapsaltok and then Bangya!”… BIGBANG-Style Humor

BIGBANG’s music is special. They use unsexy and unsophisticated words, to create perfect lyrics.

The most-outstanding word in “BAE BAE”, the beginning of the project for BIGBANG’s comeback as a complete team, was “Chapsaltok” (Korean sticky rice cake). Then, new song “BANG BANG BANG” is giving even bigger excitement to listeners, with the word “Bangya Bangya Bangya” (the sound of gunfire in Korean) used in its chorus. They sound fun, and subtly sexy when sung through the mouth of BIGBANG.

When “BAE BAE” was first released, I was so surprised to hear the word “Chapsaltok” in the song. Of course I was surprised by how charmingly and sophisticatedly they pronounced the word, but it was BIGBANG’s wit to use the word to mean “perfect match of a man and woman” that made me listen to the song over and over again.

“BAE BAE”’s mood is sexy, lovely, and cute, and its climax is the chorus part in which the phrase “Chapsaltok is what our match is like” is sung. G-DRAGON’s voice shouting “Chapsaltok” is sexy, and the lyrics that might otherwise feel erotic sound charming with a rather cute and mellow mood.

Following “BAE BAE”, I was surprised once again to hear “Bangya” in BIGBANG’s new song “BANG BANG BANG”. The phrase “Bangya Bangya Bangya” in the chorus part stands out distinctively. Fans are saying that the phrase is especially catchy, and it is becoming a buzzword.

BIGBANG’s restrained performance of group dance stands out in “BANG BANG BANG”, and its music video and the song itself give a feel like a blockbuster movie. The video shows a fancy and magnificent atmosphere, which can be described as “intense”. Amidst such atmosphere, “Bangya Bangya Bangya” shouted by G-DRAGON shooting a gun with his hands sounds cute, making listeners more concentrate on the song. G-DRAGON’s unique voice with a slight nasal sound expresses this part in an even more sophisticated manner.

Those witty lyrics in “BAE BAE” and “BANG BANG BANG” are the climax of BIGBANG’s humor. For both of the songs, BIGBANG member G-DRAGON and T.O.P took part in writing the lyrics. BIGBANG’s ability to use words most unlikely to be seen in a sophisticated song in a sexy and trendy way is what makes people listen to their songs again and again.

I cannot wait to see a new BIGBANG-style humor in the new song to be release next month, following “Chapsaltok” for May and “Bangya” for June.
