[OSEN Focus] “The 2nd BIGBANG”: The Reason We Need Them

We are just one day away from BIGBANG’s comeback as a whole for the first time in 3 years. Why is their comeback the hottest issue of the year, and why are all eyes in the music world on them? The reason behind it is BIGBANG’s extremely influential brand power that crosses borders.

BIGBANG returns on May 1with their new song in 3 years. YG Entertainment unveiled a poster at 0 hour of April 30 of project “M,” just one day before their comeback. This surely heightened expectations. To really understand where BIGBANG stands in the music world, we have to look at the world outside of Korea. We first have to remind ourselves why they desperately need the “2nd BIGBANG.”

Related personnel in the foreign music world are unanimous on the opinion that there should be a “second BIGBANG.” They say this because BIGBANG carries something very symbolic in their brand.

Their brand value and power overseas are simply beyond imagination. According to Brandstock Top Index (BSTI) of Brandstock, a brand value evaluating company, YG ranks #1 in the entertainment category. YG scored a total of 800.8. Runner up was SM Entertainment with 772.9.

YG artists go beyond the music circle and freely cross over to fashion, games and to overseas market. BIGBANG is YG’s representing artist and its main source of profit. BIGBANG played a significant role in helping YG produce talented artists one after another.

BIGBANG recently made 26,000 fans ecstatic at the Seoul concert. With this as the beginning, they will travel across 15 countries for the World Tour that will last until 2016, covering Asia and the Americas to perform 70 times for 1.4 million international fans. The number 1.4 million means a profit of more than 140 billion won. This is certainly good news for the agency.

Another feature that makes BIGBANG famous is that they are idols but not. For the last 9 years, BIGBANG and YG came up with long-term plans. They also reduced the number of hours appearing on TV and instead devoted the time on creating quality live performances. The upcoming album shows that it takes 3 long years to produce one album as a whole, but the fans and the public believe the more time it takes, the more perfect the album would be. They are not a group that lives on the past heyday and fans. They continue to grow after 9 years, and they are surely setting a good example for other artists.

There are only a few idol groups in Korea whose popularity is truly borderless. BIGBANG has global influence. DBSK, who were the pioneers of entering a foreign market, broke up, and this was nothing new. BIGBANG is an unprecedented case, and an exemplary case.

The title tracks “LOSER” and “BAE BAE” are the songs to be unveiled after 3 long years, and will be unveiled on and offline on May 1. “M” is the first of BIGBANG’s “MADE SERIES,” and they will be unveiling a new project single album every 1st of the month for 4 months until August. On Sept 1, a complete MADE album will be revealed.

With the comeback news, the music world is filled with tension and expectation. The entire industry is already keeping an eye on the powerful influence that BIGBANG is about to bring to music charts, and fans are hugely excited about how much the group will show once again in the new album. Many are curious to see BIGBANG as a whole for the first time in years on TV programs apart from seeing them perform tracks in their album.
